Brazil Bound: A U.S. Traveler's Guide to the 2024 Visa Requirements

Hey there, fellow travelers! Big news for those planning a trip to the vibrant and beautiful Brazil: starting January 10, 2024, U.S. citizens will need to jump through a new hoop – getting a visa. Let's dive into what this means for your travel plans.

What's Changing?

Remember the days when you could just hop on a plane to Brazil without worrying about a visa? Well, those days are taking a pause. Brazil has announced that travelers from the U.S., Canada, and Australia will need an e-visa to enter the country. This change marks a shift from the visa-free travel that was introduced in 2019.

Getting Your E-Visa: The Essentials

Cost and Validity

  • Price Tag: The e-visa will cost $80.90.

  • Validity: For U.S. citizens, it's valid for 10 years. For Canadians and Australians, it's 5 years. And yes, it allows multiple entries.

Application Process

  • Where to Apply: Head over to brazil.vfsevisa.com.

  • Timeline: It takes up to five business days to process, but it’s advised to apply two months in advance.

What You Need for the E-Visa:

  • A valid passport with two free pages.

  • A completed online application form.

  • A passport-style photo (See detailed guidelines).

  • Proof of your round-trip reservation.

  • A bank statement showing transactions for the last 30 days and at least $2,000 for your travels.

Pro Tip:

Print two copies of your e-visa and keep a digital copy on your phone.

Planning Ahead

Brazil is high on my list of countries to visit. With this new visa requirement in place, I reccomend the the following:

  • Apply Early: Get your e-visa sorted two months before your trip.

  • Mind the Dates: If you’re traveling around January 10, 2024, apply for your e-visa well in advance to avoid any travel hiccups.

Why the Change?

Brazil’s decision comes down to reciprocity. The U.S., Canada, and Australia require visas for Brazilian nationals, so Brazil's reintroducing the same for these countries. (Between you and me, the U.S. has significantly more requirements for Brazilians have to visit the U.S.)

The Bottom Line

While it might seem like an extra step, getting your e-visa is pretty straightforward and it's all online. Just plan ahead and before you know it you will be exploring the unmatchable beauty of Brazil in no time.

Happy travels and don't forget your e-visa! 🌴✈️🇧🇷
